Is Halloween older than Christmas? How did an Irish tradition become a global phenomenon?Discover how Halloween began over 2000 years ago in Ireland with the Celtic festival of Samhain marking the end of the harvest and the start of winter. Celebrated on 31 October, it was seen as a liminal moment when the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, allowing spirits to cross into our world. This festival eventually developed into the Catholic feast days of All Souls and All Saints (with links to Día de los Muertos)

Studieskolen welcomes award-winning writer Brendan Killeen for a talk and lively debate about this cultural phenomenon that grips both Ireland and Denmark. Brendan is an award-winning Irish journalist, writer and editor who has been living in Copenhagen for 20 years. He works in communications at the European Environment Agency and is currently working on a collection of short stories.

Halloween around the world todayHalloween is now part of global popular culture thanks to social media, TV and films. However, Brendan's recollections of Halloween in Dublin of the 1970’s involved dubious, homemade costumes and handouts of fruit and nuts! And his first experience of Halloween in Denmark involved his children being offered a sausage by a confused neighbour.

We will also look at some central questions: How did the tradition of using turnips as laterns change to pumpkins? How is Halloween celebrated today in Ireland? How do the Danes celebrate Halloween?

Join the debateAfter the talk, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss them. You can choose to talk about the topics brought up in the talk or add any other questions you have that are related.

You don’t need to speak perfect English – just come if you want to participate, listen, and share your impressions. The conversation will take place in English at a pace that everyone can follow.

You will also get a little taste-tester of Irish Halloween. Don’t worry – it’s not scary!

Debat og oplæg med en personlig, irsk vinkel på halloweens lange historieVi har inviteret Brendan Killeen til at fortælle og perspektivere halloween – især den måde, den bliver fejret på i Irland og Danmark. Brendan er en prisvindende irsk journalist, forfatter og redaktør, som har boet i København i 20 år. Han arbejder med kommunikation til dagligt og skriver i øjeblikket på en novellesamling.

Er halloween ældre end julen? Hvordan blev en irsk tradition et fænomen på tværs af lande?Halloween begyndte for over 2000 år siden i Irland med den keltiske festival Samhain, der senere udviklede sig til de katolske helligdage allesjælesdag og allehelgensdag.
Halloween er nu en del af den globale populærkultur – men med store forskelle. Brendan Killeens egne minder fra halloween i Dublin i 1970’erne omfatter hjemmelavede kostumer og uddeling af frugt og nødder, og til hans første halloween i Danmark blev hans børn tilbudt en pølse af en forvirret nabo!
