It is said that Icelandic is the language most similar to the Old Norse language spoken throughout the Nordic countries a thousand years ago. The grammar is largely unchanged, and the language has not been as badly exposed to foreign influences. You will therefore gain a better understanding of Danish if you learn Icelandic.
