More than half fail nationwide

More than half of all candidates fail the Danish Naturalisation Test (Indfødsretsprøven) each year. Participants from Studieskolen’s test preparation course achieved a very different result: everyone who attended the course and took the test at Studieskolen passed. Studieskolen will offer the course again in April, this time with room for even more participants.

A test that many find difficult

The citizenship test consists of 45 multiple choice questions about Danish culture, history, society and values. To pass, you must answer at least 36 questions correctly, including at least four of the five questions about values.

When the test was last held on 26 November 2025, only 47.2% of the 2,903 people taking the test passed, according to the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration. Sadly, this number is not shocking. In previous years it has also been only around half who passed the test. Studieskolen decided to do something to change this by helping future test participants prepare more effectively.

Active learning makes the difference

The preparation course for the Naturalisation Test was offered for the first time in the autumn of 2025. During the course, participants work through the material step by step and take an active part in the lessons.

“You cannot just sit and listen,” says teacher Lene Hendel.

“It is a very large amount of material, and we know that people learn best when they work with it in different ways. They need to talk, listen and discuss. That is what helps the knowledge stay with them,” explains Lene.

After the course, one participant wrote this email to Lene, which we bring here with permission:

Dear Lene,
I have just received the news that I passed the Naturalisation Test with 43 correct answers. :-)
Thank you very much for your great effort with the course. I think we all gained a lot from both the content and the new format. The group work and exercises were very helpful and helped us focus on the material, I think.
Kind regards,
Bernd (Monday afternoon course)

Five questions are particularly hard to prepare for – but not impossible

Most of the test can be prepared for by studying the official material. However, the test also includes five questions focusing on current events in Denmark. And those can be hard to predict. Thankfully, this is included in the lesson plan. “We also discuss current events during the course, as these might appear in the test,” says Lene.

A strong result

The good news is that all of the nine participants on the course who took Indfødsretsprøven at Studieskolen passed. Other participants chose to take the test elsewhere in Denmark, and Studieskolen does not have access to their results. (The course was held online with participants from across the country, while the test itself must be taken in person. This can be done at several locations across Denmark.)

The next preparation course for the Naturalisation Test begins on 7 April, and there are still places available.

The next Naturalisation Test will take place on 3 June, and the registration deadline is 29 April.
