Use your Danish

This course is for you if you have a basic understanding of Danish. Perhaps you have just completed a course at Basic Level (A2) and can already understand and say many things in Danish. You can talk about everyday topics and take part in a simple conversation. You have a good vocabulary and are ready to move on to Lower Intermediate Level.

But first, you need more practice speaking Danish and you need to get your pronunciation in place.

Speak Danish in everyday life

To activate your vocabulary, we practise Danish in everyday situations and talk about topics such as food and habits, city life and culture, and films and TV series.

We also work with small talk, which is an important part of everyday conversations.

Perhaps you have experienced a Dane asking you something in Danish and you reply in English, only to realise afterwards how you could have said it in Danish. Being able to respond spontaneously takes practice, and that is exactly what we work on in this course.

Get your pronunciation right

We work with the many sounds of Danish and cover topics including:

• The Danish "sound alphabet". Which letter corresponds to which sound? For example, 'a' is pronounced differently in Anne and Arne, and 'g' is pronounced differently in bog and god.
• The consonants that are most difficult to pronounce, such as the soft 'd' in grød and the 'r' in Roskilde.
• Difficult vowels such as 'æ', 'ø' and 'å' in ræv, blød and dårlig.
• The melody of the language, including stress, rhythm and intonation. Does the sentence go up or down?

We practise and repeat sounds and pronunciation together in groups, so that good pronunciation gradually becomes more natural.

You will also receive individual guidance on where and how the different sounds are produced in the mouth.

You will get access to Moodle, our online learning platform, where you can find everything you need for the course in one place. You can also stay in touch with the other students and talk about what is happening in class. On Moodle, you can:

• See the plan for the entire course, individual lessons and homework
• Find your teaching materials (we do not use a textbook; the teacher uploads the materials to Moodle)
• Communicate with your teacher and classmates
• Keep up and catch up on anything you have missed if you are absent during the course

Practical information

The course focuses entirely on spoken Danish, including conversation and pronunciation.

The course is for you if you already know some Danish, for example if you have completed Danish for Beginners 1 and 2 and Danish – Basic Levels 1 and 2 at Studieskolen, or modules 1 and 2 of Danish Education 3.

The course is at level A2+ in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Between lessons, you will have a small amount of homework, typically involving short conversations with Danish speakers where you also focus on getting the pronunciation right.

There are 10 to 18 students in the class.
