About learning Swedish at Studieskolen

"We want to create a world where people can talk to each other and understand each other."

Language can be a means of achieving a goal - you may want to travel in another country, you may want to read books in the original language, or maybe you want to work or study abroad. Perhaps you want to talk to your American sister-in-law, your Italian father-in-law or with your foreign family or friends.
At Studieskolen we want to help you achieve your goals.
We see languages as a means of communicating with other people. Therefore, we emphasize that from the very beginning of your language course you will learn to use the language to communicate effectively. From day one, you will be able to say something in your 'new' language.
Of course, languages are different. It is easier to learn a European language that uses the Latin alphabet than an Asian language, where you also have to learn another alphabet. However, regardless of which language you want to study at Studieskolen, we make sure that you learn the practical use of the language.
We draw on modern research-based knowledge about how languages are acquired. For example, the first phase focuses on speaking skills and the next step is systematic grammar knowledge.
We also offer courses that are focused on sentence analysis, grammar and grammatical exercises or writing. Some students require these specialized courses, for example in connection with work.

How do we structure the lessons?
In all our courses we ensure variation in the lesson activities and as much speaking time as possible for the course participants. We ensure that there is time for everyone and that we cover different language skills. We also cater to different learning styles - some students need to see things while others need to hear them. Some students need to repeat things while others do not.
We focus on authentic language usage. We work with normal language, the language we need for everyday living. Therefore, when we do exercises, also grammatical exercises, they have a purpose. For example, planning a party or agreeing on what to see at the cinema. The kind of language we need for everyday living. We do not conjugate verbs for the sake of the verbs.

Well-educated teachers
Studieskolen’s teachers are professional and most of them hold a university degree in languages. They are also experienced language teachers who know what the obstacles are when a Dane is learning a particular language.
We always want to improve our skills so Studieskolen encourages all teachers to take part in further training. For example, they have taken courses in language coaching - which means we can help our students become aware of how they learn best. Because we know that we have different leaning styles.
We also work with 'collegial supervision', which means that we visit each other's lessons and help each other. When we talk about how we teach, we encourage the exchange of ideas and knowledge sharing – which ensures quality and improves teaching.
In addition, of course, we are all very different.

Satisfaction and focus on the student
Once a year we ask our students what they think of Studieskolen and about our lessons. We do this to improve and to ensure that our courses match what our students need.

Class size
In a language class there has to be time for everyone to speak – so we teach in small classes. Some classes have approx. 20 students, but in practice many classes often only have 12-15 students. Some classes only have 6-7 course participants, so they cost more.

Moodle learning platform
Moodle is Studieskolen's online learning environment and we use it in all courses. All students have access to Moodle and can:

  • See the course plan and teaching materials
  • Find information about the individual classes
  • Access homework
  • Find videos and other extra material that the teacher uploads
  • Communicate with the teacher and the other students

If you are absent during the course, you can always follow up on the missed lessons in Moodle.

Extra lessons
If you need help with grammar, written exercises or additional conversation training, you can buy one-to-one lessons with the teacher to supplement your classroom training. It costs 395 kr. per lesson (45 minutes).
