If you experience that you don’t see enough jobs advertised that fit you, then sending unsolicited applications to selected businesses is a good strategy for you – of course in combination with continuing to apply for jobs that are advertised.
What do you learn on this course?
When you send an unsolicited application, you need to decide what organisations to apply to. Perhaps you already have a Top 20 list, perhaps you need to add more places to the list that are relevant to you.
You learn to fine-tune your search in terms of field, location and the size of the organisation. You also learn a method that makes you able to find the names and contact info for relevant managers in the organisations and businesses you want to get in touch with.
You learn about and practise writing a short unsolicited application to your selected businesses – what we call an ”appetizer-mail”. You also get an exercise that helps you contact them and figuring out:
- What projects and tasks they are facing, and why they might need your help.
- What opportunities they might have for hiring you short-term, long-term or perhaps as cover for parental leave.
On the course, you will get a template that you can use to create a phone script that you can use when contacting organisations. We will practise you contacting a business using an exercise where you and the other participants role-play and get concrete experience and feedback on your “phone call”. Most people who try it say that it is a great exercise that really whets their appetite for calling up businesses or organisations.
Finally, you do an exercise in which you plan your campaign for reaching out your chosen organisations unsolicited.
How is the class conducted?
The class takes place as an interaction between
- Important information, giving you the knowledge needed to start making unsolicited applications
- A cohesive set of exercises that gives you specific and concrete experience finding relevant businesses and organisations, planning and executing your campaign and handling contact with the organisations in a targeted and effective way
- Your teacher facilitates all exercises. The exercises take place in small groups in which you inspire each other. After each exercise, there will be feedback across groups. The exercises are rounded off in the class as a whole, and the teacher ensures an exchange of experiences and feedback across the groups.
The course is conducted in English.
