In France, May 1st is celebrated by giving each other lilies of the valley. May 1st is an official holiday and all workers are guaranteed wages and everything is closed in France. Why do the French give lilies of the valley?

Since the lilies of the valley are given on the workers' day, the many small bells symbolize the French workers.
It is an old tradition dating back to the Renaissance, where the French king Charles IX gave lilies of the valley to the ladies at the court on May 1st, 1561. Since that it is believed that it brings good fortune to receive lilies of the valley on May 1st.
The lily of the valley symbolizes the white part of the French tricolor. The tricolor stands for 'liberty, equality and fraternity'. The white part of the tricolor represents equality, the red part represents fraternity and the blue part represents liberty.
