Language can be a means of achieving a goal - perhaps you want to travel with ease in another country, read books in the original language or work or study abroad. Maybe you want to be able to talk to your American in-laws, English-speaking grandchildren or father-in-law or with foreign friends.
At Studieskolen, we always do our best to ensure that you achieve your goal.
As language is a means of communicating with other people, we think it is important that you speak the language right from the start of your course. Already after your first lesson, you will be able to say something in your ‘new’ language.
We base our teaching on cutting-edge research-based knowledge about how language is learnt. In the first phase, we focus on spoken communication, and then include grammar, which functions as the scaffolding of the language, as you increase your vocabulary and skill in expressing yourself. We use a method that involves the teacher giving you time to discover which vocabulary you lack in order to solve specific tasks, which strengthens your motivation and desire to learn more.
What form does the teaching take?
For all our courses, we ensure interesting, varied classes and that you have as much time to speak the language as possible. We focus on different skills and we try to accommodate different learning styles, e.g. some need to see the language written down, others just need to hear it, and some need to repeat things several times.
We focus on using the language in authentic situations. This means we work with the natural language that you need outside the classroom. When we do language tasks, including grammatical exercises, they have a clear practical purpose. This could be, for example, anything from planning a party to discussing what film to see at the cinema with your friend. You can use this sort of language in many different contexts in your daily life. We do not conjugate verbs just for the sake of it.
Who will I meet in the class?
On your course, you will meet students with different nationalities, ages and language goals. There will be people from different cultures all of whom can share their knowledge about their country, language and different traditions linked to, for example, festivals and celebrations, food, drink, music, etc.
A focus on continuing education
Studieskolen’s teachers are well-educated and the majority have a university degree in language. They are also experienced language teachers who are familiar with the common problems foreigners face when learning English.
We are continually striving to improve, so Studieskolen provides training for all its teachers in, among other things, language coaching. This means that we can help our students identify how they personally learn best because we know that people learn in different ways.
We also practise “collegial supervision”, which means that we observe each other’s teaching for inspiration. Talking to each other promotes the exchange of ideas and knowledge, which helps us to maintain our high level of quality.
Satisfaction with the student in the centre
Once a year, we ask our students what they think of Studieskolen and our teaching. We do this to improve and to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of our students.
Class size
On an English course, everyone should have time to speak the language. Therefore, we have small classes. Some have approximately 16 students, but in practice, many classes only have 10-16 students. Some classes only have 6-7 students, which means the price is higher.
Access to our online teaching platform – also after the course has finished
Studieskolen uses Moodle, which is one of the most widely-used online learning platforms. With personal access to Moodle, you can:
- Find the course plan and teaching material
- Find information about each individual teaching session
- Get access to homework
- Watch videos or access additional material uploaded by your teacher
- Communicate with your teacher and fellow students
- Follow what has been happening and catch up if you have been absent
- Access the material including exercises, etc., for a whole year after your course has finished
One-to-one teaching
If you need more individualised help with, for example, grammar, writing, or speaking, we offer one-to-one teaching as a supplement to your group lessons.
