Writing a good job application – how do you do it?

Learn how to write job applications that work! Your applications should be targeted towards the job you are applying for – and you have to describe your motivation for applying for this specific job.

Man at computer
You have probably already written one or more job applications. But you also know that you haven’t quite nailed it and shown exactly what you’re capable of and what you can contribute.
The aim of this course is to make you able to write a targeted and engaged job application, one where you use concrete examples to show why you are the one they should invite for an interview.

What do you learn on this course?

On this course, we take a real job advertisement and use this as the basis for exercises. We have selected the job so that it is one that you are able to apply for on the basis of your higher education. This means that the exercises will give you concrete knowledge of how to handle different requirements in the job that are relevant to you.

You will learn to identify all requirements and expectations in the job so that you are sure you have the full overview of all requirements.

Often, a job advertisement mentions the option of calling your potential boss-to-be in order to ask questions about the job. A lot of people don’t want to contact employers by phone. They might think, “What could I ask about?” or, “I don’t want to intrude” and so they never call. However, a phone call is a golden opportunity for you to gather more information and create a good first impression, and that’s why you should call. On this course, you will learn how to handle the phone call, and we will make a script you can use for support. After the call, you will be able to write an even more targeted and engaging application.

You will also learn about the structure of an application, ensuring that you are able to use your full focus on writing a targeted application. This will make it easier for you to write applications going forward - you will get faster at it, and you will write higher-quality applications. That’s why we will also do exercises where you talk about your motivation for applying for a specific job at a specific organisation, and exercises where you get to give examples of professional as well as personal skills that are targeted the specific job.
All exercises are based on the specific job advertisement that you will be presented with on the course.

How is the class conducted?

The class takes place as an interaction between

  • Important knowledge that makes you able to write a targeted and engaged job application
  • A cohesive set of exercises based on a concrete job advertisement that gives you specific and concrete experience analysing job advertisements and putting together targeted and engaging applications

Your teacher facilitates all exercises. The exercises take place in small groups in which you inspire each other. After each exercise, there will be feedback across groups.
The course is conducted in English.
