Our Danish education summer school concludes with smiles

August 15, 2024

This weekend, we bid farewell to the last participants in our Danish summer school. Over the past six weeks, a total of 1312 individuals have taken part in our summer offerings for people entitled to free Danish education. And they have been happy to join.

Learning Danish in a different way
Our summer school is an offer for anyone entitled to free Danish education. In our summer school, participants could choose from courses with various themes and also interact with people at different levels – providing a great opportunity to learn Danish in a different and fun way.
One of the participants, Olena from Poland, attended several courses over the summer. "Summer school has been very beneficial for me," said Olena. "If you're not going away on vacation, it’s nice to be able to continue the learning process. I enjoy school, that’s why I’m here every week!"

‘It has been an eye-opener’
The courses at the summer school are different from the regular modules in Danish education. People could choose to take a course where they practised, for example, writing or pronouncing Danish correctly. But there are also many unique and fun approaches to Danish: courses with city walks, art analysis, museum visits and much more.
Olta from London appreciated the variety: "I took part in two different courses – one focused on pronunciation and one with city walks. In regular Danish lessons, I often speak with a fellow student who might not know the correct pronunciation. However, in the pronunciation workshop, my teacher can spend time listening to my pronunciation, allowing me to really focus on improving.
With the city walks, it's nice to get out of the classroom while still learning Danish. It’s also interesting to have lessons with people in other modules – people who are more advanced than me. It has been an eye-opener in terms of what it takes to reach the next level."

Good attendance and positive experiences
Our teachers report that attendance has generally been good. Several students praised their teachers, saying they learned more than just the course content.
Emmanuelle from Nigeria put it this way: "I chose to attend the pronunciation workshop because I was really bad at pronouncing Danish. It’s difficult to learn a new language, especially when you come from a country that’s very different. But I’ve learned much more than that. I understand Danish better, I can read it better and I’ve become better at communicating in Danish. Having a good and open teacher has been a great help."

We also held summer courses for paying students
In addition to summer school, we once again offered summer courses for residents who are not eligible for free Danish education. The courses consist of three weeks of intensive morning lessons combined with various cultural activities in the afternoon. And participants could choose from courses at all levels.
This year, our summer courses had a total of 130 participants, and we had to create additional classes at some levels to accommodate everyone.

Will return next year
There is now almost a year until the summer school returns.
We are delighted that so many wanted to participate, and we are now in the process of evaluating so that we can put together an even better offering for next year.
Of course, there is always room for improvement, and we are open to feedback.
Like this comment from Olta: "It was nice to visit Carlsberg – but I really wish we had had the opportunity to end with a beer tasting!"
