Signe Wendt Galster

We have asked our teachers to recommend a place, some Danish music or a piece of Danish music. It could also be a Danish writer or artist. This is what Signe recommends.

Do you have a favourite place in Copenhagen?
”I can never find my way. My sense of location doesn’t work. It’s always been that way.
That’s why I don’t have favourite places, because I wouldn’t be able to find them again. Instead, all places are my favourite places. And in a city like Copenhagen, it’s easy.
To me, Copenhagen is a city that is green as well as blue. Wherever you are, you can almost always find something green. I really like that. Some say that green is good for the eyes, and I think that is absolutely right. I also really like the fact that you can always see the sky above the city. This is a city that doesn’t have many tall buildings. When I look up, the sky is usually blue.”

What is your favourite music?
”I have always been very fond of jazz, and jazz has always been very fond of Copenhagen. I like thinking about that.
Copenhagen is a jazz city. This is witnessed by many street signs as well as names of squares and names on gravestones (if you can find them!).
But the jazzy thing about Copenhagen is more fundamental, I think. Jazz builds on many different traditions and cultures – and you can say the same about Copenhagen.
There is probably good reason why I feel so at home here in jazzy Copenhagen, where there is always room for improvisation in the middle of all the green and blue. Room for the familiar – and room for the new.”
