International Christmas songs are up for debate at Studieskolen
Christmas is full of music. Why is it that Christmas hymns and carols resonate so deeply with us - and why do we sing more at Christmas than at other holidays?
We have invited Mathias Hammer to talk about some of the Christmas songs that exist in several languages. How come? Does music bind us together across languages? Is language also a form of music?
After Mathias' presentation and debate about Christmas music, we welcome you to our cosy Christmas rooms, where Studieskolen's teachers present traditions - and music - from many countries around the world, from Latin America to Denmark.
What is the difference between Danish and International Christmas songs? Join the debate
Which Christmas songs are your favourites? Are they sung in other countries? Can you better understand Danish Christmas when you listen to Danish Christmas songs? Is there a difference between Christmas songs that exist in several languages and Danish Christmas songs? Come and listen to Mathias Hammer's presentation and participate in the debate about Christmas songs afterward. You will also get the chance to sing along to a couple of Christmas songs.
Mathias Hammer is a pianist, music communicator, and a host of radio and TV. He has been part of the folk high school songbook ('højskolesangbogen') committee, which selected the songs for the new songbook that was published in November 2020. Mathias Hammer himself will be at the piano to accompany us when we sing the Christmas songs.
Everyone is welcome. We hope to see both students from our many foreign language courses, but of course also our many international students who are learning Danish at Studieskolen. The talk will be in Danish, but you are welcome to comment during the debate in English if you are more comfortable with that. You are also welcome to bring a friend, colleague or family member to the event - you do not need to attend Studieskolen to participate.
Get close to Christmas in other countries
After the debate about Christmas in Denmark, we invite you to ask questions about Christmas in other countries. Several of our teachers will present their country or region's Christmas traditions, and here the debate about Christmas music continues - for the individual, for the family, for society, for nationality. Are there similarities or significant differences from country to country? There will be Christmas hygge and Christmas treats in Studieskolen's rooms during the event. There will also be a presentation of Danish Christmas for our international students.
Language exchange
This event is for all our students – those of you who are learning Danish as well as many Danes who are learning other languages. It is a good opportunity for language exchange. If you are looking for a tandem partner to exchange languages, we will provide a framework where you can advertise for a conversation partner in the language you are learning while also stating which language is your native tongue.
The event takes place:
Friday 29 November 2024 from 16:00 to 18:00
Studieskolen, Borgergade 12
You can see the room number on the board when you enter.
We will offer some sweet Christmas treats, and you can buy drinks.
The event is open to all. It is free, but we ask that you register in advance.
